I see many clients this time of year making a commitment to their health! We know that New Year’s Resolutions are extremely common. They typically focus around health. Specifically, improving diet and increasing exercise are two of the most common resolutions.
I assume there are two reasons why people focus on diet and exercise this time of year. One reason is to look better (i.e. cosmetic). The other reason is to feel better (i.e. improve health). Over time, I have surveyed people asking them what the main reason is for their focus on diet and exercise in the new year. The majority of people report they are seeking to improve their overall health. I commend everyone for using this time of year to move their health in the right direction.
Often times, I see an influx of new clients in January. Many of them report the New Year was their tipping point in calling to schedule an appointment. They view chiropractic and massage therapy as a tool that will assist them in improving their health.
These individuals are a hundred percent correct. Some people view chiropractic as a pain management tool. For instance, they may injure their low back and view chiropractic treatments as a method to remove their pain. We have some clients like this and are happy to help assist them in living a pain free life.
However, most of our clients see chiropractic and massage therapy as much more than a pain management tool. They understand that chiropractic adjustments improve the health and function of the nervous system. This improves the overall health of the body. Massage therapy is used for many reasons, including decreasing muscle tension and increasing range of motion. It helps many with stress reduction, anxiety reduction and assists them with their mental health goals. I believe that massage therapy also helps improve overall health.
If your New Year’s Resolution revolves around improving your health, there are many ways you can accomplish this. Below are a few examples:
– If you have not seen your family Doctor in over a year, consider scheduling a routine physical. Routine physicals save lives and identify health issues that may not currently be causing symptoms.
– Take steps to improve your mental health. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Even if you have never had any mental health issues, it should not be neglected. Daily mediation is a great tool to improve focus and decrease stress.
– Consider water intake. Hydration affects the entire body. Most people do not drink enough liquids. Target 64 ounces per day as a goal.
– Make a commitment to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
