It has been a gorgeous spring in Ann Arbor! At Precision Chiropractic, we have had the windows open with the sun shining, while providing exceptional care to our clients.

This time of year is a reminder for many to get active and shed the extra pounds we may have gained during the long winter. Many clients ask “What is the best type of exercise to begin with?” This is a complicated question that is dependent on a variety of factors, including the individual’s current health status, their activity level, and any challenges that may exist with their health.
Often, I counsel our clients of the best approach to a new exercise program. Many individuals that are currently active, athletic and exercising regularly, have a solid grasp of their exercise routine and their personal goals for exercise and health. However, other individual that have been inactive for a long period of time are not sure where to start. Don’t worry, I am here to help!
The best advice is to just get moving! Any increase in activity is better than remaining sedentary. Movement is life. As we move more and become more active, we see dramatic improvements in all parts of health, including the health of the spine, muscles and nervous system.
In my opinion, walking is the very best exercise in the world. It is helpful at any age, including those that are elderly. The speed, length and duration can be adjusted to accommodate any individual’s current health situation. Swimming is another great form of cardiovascular exercise. It allows us to achieve great aerobic exercise without bearing weight on the joints.
I also encourage people to begin light weight training. Those just starting a weight training program should use very light weight and focus on completing the exercises with proper form and technique. Increases in repetition should be completed before increasing weight. I encourage individual’s new to weight training to consider machines or resistance bands rather than free weight until they get stronger.
Have a discussion with your primary care physician before beginning any training program. Also, consider working with a skilled personal trainer. A personal trainer will ensure that you are using the proper technique and form when completing exercise. This will greatly reduce the risk of injury and help you achieve your goals at the appropriate pace.

I also deliver customized exercise and stretching programs to assist with their care. I believe that quality health care requires a multifaceted approach.
